Backtests have limitations
Simulated results are based on historical data and assumptions about execution, slippage, fees, and liquidity. Real-world results can differ materially due to:
- Look-ahead bias if a strategy uses data not actually available at the simulated trade time.
- Survivorship bias in historical universes.
- Liquidity assumptions that do not hold in stressed markets.
- Broker-specific slippage, fees, and margin requirements.
- Discretionary deviation from the system in live trading.
No guarantee of future performance
A backtest that produced 30% annualized returns is not a promise of future returns. Markets evolve. Strategies that worked in one regime can fail in another. Always assume the possibility of total loss before deploying capital.
